The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA) is currently running an exhibit of rugs woven by anonymous makers from Afghanistan. The exhibit entitled “Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia” depicts major historical events on rugs made from ancient traditional means.
Many of the rugs on display showcase political issues that have made a mark in world history, such as wars and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. By looking at the ancient works of art, exhibit visitors may experience a mixture of feelings brought about by uncomfortable violent themes and the ancient beauty of rug making.
Here are just some of the Afghan rugs on display at the SMOCA exhibit:
The SMOCA Afghan rug exhibit is organized by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, and will run until April 19, 2015.
