The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA) is currently running an exhibit of rugs woven by anonymous makers from Afghanistan. The exhibit entitled “Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia” depicts major historical events on rugs made from ancient traditional means.

Many of the rugs on display showcase political issues that have made a mark in world history, such as wars and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. By looking at the ancient works of art, exhibit visitors may experience a mixture of feelings brought about by uncomfortable violent themes and the ancient beauty of rug making.

The SMOCA Afghan rug exhibit is organized by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, and will run until April 19, 2015.
