Maintaining a home is difficult work. It’s not like you can just snap your fingers and everything gets arranged magically. Sometimes it takes careful planning to make things around the house work together and create a relaxing but functional atmosphere.
The living room is one of the busiest areas of any house, and so utmost care must be put into laying out the spaces and fixtures. Here are some great tips from the folks at Houzz on how to layout your living room for better functionality:
Plan your layout before moving anything
Any rearrangement without a plan on hand may lead to rework, which may lead you to spend more time and effort. Consider how your family uses the living room, so that traffic may not be disrupted.
Balance traffic and conversations in creating room space
The space inside the living room must be far enough to prevent people from banging their knees on furniture, but close enough for them to engage in conversations. A good number for walking space is between 2 and 4 feet.
Make sure your furniture fit in the room
A small living room cannot hold the grandiosity of a full chandelier or a huge area rug. Each piece that you place inside the room must be proportional to the room size.
Fill up your space in moderation
A living room should have a sofa, which is probably the biggest item that you will put in the living room. If you’re planning to add more items — perhaps a coffee table, a shag rug, or a lamp — make sure that they don’t make the room too busy or cramped.
