We all want to preserve our rugs, but some of us may be taken aback by the high cost of having them cleaned by a professional. If you want to save some money while being able to clean your rugs and carpets, check out this video by “Household Solutions” book series author Reena Nerbas, as she shares her recipe for a homemade carpet cleaning shampoo.
Her motivation behind making a special cleaning solution for carpets is the need to preserve the carpet. “We really want to make sure that we take good care of our carpet because they are so expensive and we want them to last for a long time,” Nerbas said.
Here are the ingredients for the homemade carpet cleaning shampoo:
- 3 tbsp dish soap
- 1 tbsp household white vinegar
- 1/4 tsp household ammonia (be careful of the strong odor!)
- 1/2 cup water
Mix the first three ingredients in a bowl, and stir them using a beater to make a foam. After seeing the formation of foam, add water and stir again.
To clean the carpet using the homemade shampoo, dip a clean white cloth on the solution and wipe it onto the carpet.
